Diary of a Learner Beekeeper

In Summer 2015 I …

  1. How a hive is structured.
  2. Different flowers which bees will visit throughout the year, in the local area.
  3. How a smoker works, using toilet rolls instead of cartridges. They were folded and tightly packed. (Our household has been saving these all summer, I think we now have enough rolls to smoke all the bees in Kemnay…)

Saw some Queen and Drone cells on frames in an apiary. Sorry no pictures of Queen cells, but you can see the Drone cells on right are larger than the workers.

In September 2015 I …

“Biology of the Bee” - Rosie Crighton

“The Beehive” - Kirsty Sutherland (Bee Inspector and Beekeeper)

“What do I need to keep bees?” - Graham Torrie

“Products of the Hive” - Rosie Crighton

(Unfortunately, I missed the last two lectures, but will probably see them again next year )

** Important update **

The ADBKA Beginner lectures may begin September 2016 at Inverurie Academy or Aberdeen Grammar - Keep on checking the ADBKA website for more details.

If you are thinking about beekeeping, then I would definitely recommend these lectures, they are packed full of practical information.

Top Tips:

If wearing a beesuit with a fencing veil, wear a baseball hat to stop the veil from getting too close to your face.

Use a midgie spray for evening hive inspections.
